Welcome
to St. Amelia Outreach. Our goal is to provide various services to our parish
community. We are comprised of over 100 volunteers who give their time, talent
and helping hands and hearts to reach out to those in need. They are dedicated,
generous, dependable, willing to listen, and to all of them we are very
grateful, for we could not help so many in need without them. They are
available for:
-
Transportation: take parishioners to doctor,
hospital and other appointments.
-
Visitation: some will visit our parishioners in the
hospital, nursing homes, and the homebound.
-
Eucharistic Ministers to the sick: we have trained
Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick who will bring the Eucharist to the ill or
home-bound on weekends or weekdays and visit for a short time.
-
Bereavements: this ministry is to provide comfort
for a family when there is a death. We arrange with the family for times they
need volunteers as house-sitters during the hours of the wake and/or funeral.
The time spent by the volunteer is usually 1 to 1-l/2 hours.
-
Ministry of Praise: this is a group of people who
receive a monthly letter containing spiritual readings and reflections for
those willing to pray for the Parish and its needs. It is done in their homes
at their convenience.
-
Office Staff:
Our secretaries perform a variety of clerical duties including
answering the phone once a week for 2 to 3 hrs. We have about 30 office staff
including substitutes. They address cards once a month to our nursing home
parishioners. At Christmas and Easter, they also address cards to over 100
homebound parishioners. We have various volunteers who come regularly to the
office to sort and pack clothing and household items for the many agencies we
assist such as City Mission, Harvest House, the Psychiatric Center, Erie County
Home, and the migrant workers in Niagara County. We also pack summer clothing,
towels, linens, shoes and various items for the people of Nicaragua. For this
project, we have drivers that take the boxes to Ann Marie Zon on Transit Road
in East Amherst where they are transferred to containers to be shipped to
Nicaragua. Calls for food are directed to our St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Everyone is always welcome to stop in the office, have a cup of tea or coffee
and visit. Some volunteers stop in and help out by trimming our cancelled
stamps that are collected for the missions. They also cut circles from used
greeting cards to be made into placemats for the holidays (Easter and
Christmas) to be delivered to our homebound and nursing home patients. We
almost always have some kind of project that we're working on.
As you're searching the web and want to do something that really makes you feel
good, consider stopping in to 210 St. Amelia Drive at the Outreach office and
see what we're about. We are always in need of more volunteers to help us to do
God's work which is never ending.
For more information call Outreach at 832-2542 and speak with Judy. We'll be
looking for you or waiting for your call
